The proposal for Surrounded Islands was made by Jeanne Claude and was completed on May 7, 1983. Using bright pink polypropylene fabric--a thick, water-resistant material--eleven of the islands situated in Biscayne Bay were 'surrounded' with the cloth extending out sixty-one meters from every point on all sides. 603,850 square meters of the cloth was used in the creation of this project.
